Why some people keep having same chronic/recurrent /life long mental health issues

There are many reasons, here I just mention a few very common ones.

  1. The symptoms they don’t like,  is a remedy of a worser symptom: obsessive compulsive behavior is a remedy of anxiety disorder. Although the obsessive compulsive behavior is cumbersome, time consuming, yet it remove the anxiety. The Patient maintains their obsessive compulsion behavior so to avoid the feel of anxiety. An person with compulsive checking behavior, after he checked all the doors and all of them are locked, he feel safe.
  2. Bipolar disorder: family member of the bipolar patient very worry about their love one in the manic phase. However, the patient in manic phase often tell me that they like that feeling of manic. Sometimes, they intentionally discontinue their Bipolar medication, jus to get a feel of manic.
  3. Addictive behaviors: most of the patient with addictions, like their addictions. Their addictive behaviors keep them away from the feeling of anxiety, boredom, unpleasant thoughts, and bad moods. Whenever any of the above feeling or thoughts come close to the surface, they experience an urge for the addictive behavior.  They only feel the urges, not the underlying anxiety, boredom, self accusing thoughts or sad mood. The urge redirect him to his addiction so he is protected from experiencing  the bad feelings. So they like the urge, they like the addictions.
  4. If you have a fatal attraction to a person with Narcissistic personality, you are bonded to suffer  disappointment, betray and abandonment. Don’t try to ask the government to lock all of them up. It won’t happen. It is because our presidential candidate is one of them! Charming is naturally attractive,  but the other side of the charming  is betray and abandonment. These two sides are inseparable. If you just found relief in knowing that the one betrayed you is narcissistic, yet you still hold on to your fatal attraction; disappointment, betray and abandonment will follow you.My advise is get into therapy to moderate your attraction to narcissistic personality.
  5. It is interesting and counter intuitive, my patients with severe anxiety don’t like anxiety, yet they are fond of the precursor of anxiety: feeling busy, important, in the spot light, and like to take on risky challenge.  Through psychotherapy they can find the balance.
